On the Underground Paris New York Review
We agreed that this was a really good my-first-worker-placement game. We haven't utilized global objectives all that much - they tend to only become viable at the very end of the game and even then, publishing a holotype seems to be worth more points. I can't see the game ever ending due to filling two cards, especially at lower player counts. I almost think the Global Objectives should be scaled to player counts, as something requiring 9 of a type is really unlikely to be fulfilled in a 2P game (so, have different objective cards for 2P, 3P, etc.). It may be that we just got really high objectives in our two games.
Can you mix in the Origins cards with the regular King of Tokyo deck?
Yes
I can’t wait to play more of this again!
Are these even real birds? But cool game
ever heard of LIFEFORM BOARDGAME?...
i have an idea, what about nxt time u make more spaces somehow i the hallways or corridors for the players to move essentially slowing them down while the alien moves normally there and ash has one fewer step than the players, lets say if u divided those long corridors into three spaces f .ex...
i think the moral tracker should work as a "shield" slowly getting weaker and depleted and instead of automatically ending the game the players either gets automatically killed separately or individually NEXT time the alien lands on them OR the player has to roll a dice and only survives on a six or on a five and six 😬🙊🙀👽🐈👻
poor daughter...😮😬😬
That must have been quite cathartic. Never thought there would be a day when I'd own more board games than Marco, but that is the case for now. I hope you got a sizeable tax deduction when you gave away a small fortune in board games. Noble effort regardless, the collection should bring many lots of joy.
Thanks for your review! Really glad you like them and I worked extremely hard on the publishing quality so appreciate you noticing that. Your comments about the swinginess and inherent difficulty in the game system are absolutely fair and I'd probably do that differently if I were to rewrite it now but I loved hearing your optimistic take on it!
Cool art.
Yep - "courtisan" is a French noun that translates to "courtier" in English. Whereas"courtesan" is an English noun for a woman whose favours are negotiable :) And this is not the first time a French publisher has made this particular translation mistake when publishing a game in English. The previous time was about 30 years ago, though.
So the mean the same!
I started with the third book in the series as it was chosen for a gamebook-reading club. I enjoyed it but thought I had probably missed something by not having reading the previous books. I do plan to read the whole series.
I played this at the UK Games Expo and liked it. Very clean rules. Although also a bit Splendor-y in that (despite some face down cards) it could get kinda math-y if you really want to win.
Thanks for the review Marco! I hadn't heard of this one before! I must check it out
They misspelled 'courtesan', but actually that word originally meant a courtier.
As someone who owns hundreds of game books (including the ones in this review), I just want to let you know that I appreciate you reviewing game books on this channel. Many board gamers would enjoy the game book medium if they were knowledgeable of its breadth. Reviewing them in this manner helps to educate board gamers thereof. Thanks!
Bon , now is the music on the cards playable , like 🐬
Ashville!? Wonderful!
Just played for the first time and it took about 7 hours.
Can the miniatures be removed from their clear bases with the sticks on?
Marco…..have you ever considered inventing a game? I’m sure with your intellectual knowledge, expertise and interest you might come up with the historical wargames of wargames? I’d certainly be interested in any game you produced.
you may want to look into Four against the Great Old Ones then
“You’re saying it wrong.”
"It’s not a true monster game-it’s a semi-monster game about a monster event!" Great review Marco.
I can’t get past the “friendship bracelet” activity for keeping track of status. Too bad
Just bought the retail version and am kicking myself for not doing the KS. Great game and great review. Curious, what is the brand of your game shelf? I’m looking for the wider shelves like yours has.
Hello! Philipp here, the creator of Aces & Armor. If you have any questions about the game, I am happy to help and answer. I have worked on this game for many years and have put all of my heart into it. Please note that this is a miniature board game for a fun skirmish in under 2 hours, not a classical wargame. I just want to make sure I set the right expectations. This is not a historical consim game like many (great) hex & counter games.
Can the miniatures be removed from their clear bases with the sticks on?
This game is made by the same maker as Trench Club. That is their WWI game with the same mechanics.
Hi Alex! Philipp here, the creator of Aces & Armor. That's correct. Thanks for pointing this out.
Adding sticks ? no thanks
The map and minis look amazing. But I agree the fiddly HP and XP adding to sticks is a turn off for me. Maybe they could implement that in a different way and give players some sort of historical theaters
Hi Jinstarro! Philipp here, the creator of Aces & Armor.Thank you so much! The system to track damage and experience on the miniatures with the beads on the poles has worked really well for a lot of players of our previously published games "Trench Club" and "Trench Club Legacy" which uses the same system. Just like everything, I totally understand this might not be it for everyone. Please also note this game was designed a fun and short skirmish boardgame, not a historical wargame. I just want to make sure to set the right expectations, so gamers can make a choice if that's the right game for them. If you have any questions, I am happy to help!
Lack of meaningful choices aside, it sounds like the grammar mistakes alone would end up irritating me. I guess this is a good example of the value in employing a skilled editor.
"Take with enough salt to form a circle of protection around your house against demon of bad games" Lol
I love the components of this game!!!!
Hi David! Philipp here, the creator of Aces & Armor.Thank you so much! I have experimented with different systems (cubes, dial wheels, etc.) to mark damage and experience on the miniatures and the beads-on-pole solution was what players most enjoyed. You can check-out reviews for "Trench Club" and "Trench Club Legacy" which uses the same system. I fully acknowledge that this is not for everyone - just like everything. Some people like rolling dice, some don't.
Thank you, Marco for another informative review!!! Somnambulism? Somewhere, the director of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is smiling. Sadly, this game book seems to have fallen short of expectations.
Is this also a solo game
Thank you for this video! I've been wondering what to do with a bunch of store credit I have at my FLGS and you may have solved that mystery for me.
Thanks. Always enjoy your content. And this gamebook looks very good. I like the puzzle angle! And if we are going to have a party, I do not want to do 4x the accounting -- glad to see he's designed some shortcuts like shared health. All the accounting is the reason why Four Against Darkness died on the table within the first hour (and D100 Dungeon was the one for me)
4 against Darkness TOTALLY got left behind. So many choices that blow that game away!
I'm definitely getting this. Looks ace.
There's a great evil in the land, and the only ones who can save the world are a small group of violent drifters?
There may be fewer gamebooks these days, but DestinyQuest books still come out WAY faster than I can play them. I've got all but this new one, but haven't even started Dune Sea yet.🤣 Being the start of a trilogy of giant books makes that one a bit intimidating to start.
Still, a nice problem to have!
Once you start, you won't stop! Raiders of Dune Sea is a massive advance on my other gamebooks - and I have a series of game guides on my UA-cam channel to help with hero building.
Been following you for years. Keep it up. Good videos. ❤
Interesting. Thanks.
I can happily confirm this is a great game after 2 plays! Very much looking forward to game #3!
Thank you for the great review!
Marco, I love your T-shirt! "Stay on target!" Thank you for your review.
Can you play as two barbarians?
Thanks for the excellent content Marco. Have a spectacular weekend my Dude!
Love this! It's been sitting on my shelf. Now I'm really excited to get it to the table. Bonus points for that t-shirt! Stay on target, Marco!
This reminds me that I have a few GURPS Conan solo adventures sitting on my shelves for something like 30 years...
Great review. Appreciated hearing all your insights and perspective on the game. 👍Really like the Mark S games. Once you invest time to learn the core elements of the “system” in one of his games, you can quickly start enjoying other 4X games - basics in place and just need to learn the always interesting and often quite innovative features unique to each game….
